Water Tower
ACRAA Water Tower / System When the ACRAA property was purchased, an artesian well was already in place. The first year of nursery operations was arduous, however, as all the water needed for our nursery had to be pumped manually. Therefore, in January of 2021 construction of a water system began in earnest. Photos 1 to 10 show the construction – the system is functioning wonderfully now. Plantas Agroflorestais
Plants for Use in Agroforestry Systems and Urban Afforestation About half the ACRAA nursery is devoted to the production of trees/plants for use in agroforestry systems and urban afforestation. Here we do not follow the same strict guidelines in terms of using only “native” species and seedlot management, as we do with our restoration plants, as these plants are for an “agricultural” application. However, all the species propagated are from the seeds of locally/regionally grown species – so although some of these may not be originally native to this area, all are now naturalized to the area (mature fruit producing trees present in the region). We do have a policy of not propagating seed brought from places outside the local region (i.e, other parts of Brazil or beyond). Currently, our selection of agroforestry plants includes 31 species and a total of around 350 plants. Most are fruit trees, but medicinal…
Plantas de Restauração
Plants for Use in Ecological Restoration / Reforestation About half the ACRAA nursery is devoted to the production of trees/plants for use in ecological restoration and reforestation. Here strict guidelines are followed in terms of using only native species that are found at, or known to be suited to the site where they will be planted. To this end we have developed a seed-lot numbering and seed registration and tracking system. This is now being managed by our Brazilian Professional Forester (Forest Engineer) – Waldeir – who started with us in March of 2022. See Waldeir’s bio here. According to this system trees/plants are numbered/divided into three categories using the prefixes P, F or I as follows: P = “Árvores da Praia” (Beach Trees). These are trees/plants native to the “inundation zone” on the banks of the river Tapajós [1]. F = “Árvores da Floresta” (Forest Trees). These are trees/plants…
Viveiro e Centro
Nursery & Center The ACRAA nursery is located on a wonderful property located right in the village of Alter do Chão [1], this only a short walk (15 min.) from the main village square or Praça, and only two blocks from the edge of a forest reserve that surrounds the village (Figure 1). This property will also be the home of our future “Center,” a place that we hope will become well known in the region and beyond as a meeting and educational center for people interested in reforestation and agroforestry in the Amazon. See future ACRAA center here. The nursery had its beginning in early 2020 with just a few seedlings, but now covers an area of about 250 square meters and with an ever-growing number and varierty of plants. Below is a selection of photos and videos that show this nursery on May 21, 2022. For a history…
